Modern regulators are extremely reliable, and on the rare occasion one misbehaves, you have built-in backups and trained responses ready to go. A regulator issue is usually a manageable inconvenience, not a crisis. Understanding how they can fail, and what to do, keeps you calm and in control.
Free flow: still breathable
The most common regulator issue is a free flow, where air rushes out continuously. It looks dramatic with all the bubbles, but the key point is that you can still breathe from a free-flowing regulator.
Sip air from the mouthpiece without sealing your lips fully, signal your buddy, and begin a calm, controlled ascent. You are trained for exactly this and it is a standard skill.

Switch to your alternate or your buddy
Every diver carries a second regulator, the octopus, as an immediate backup. If your primary regulator ever fails, you simply switch to your alternate and continue breathing.
If for some reason both were unavailable, your buddy's alternate is right there. The whole system is designed with redundancy so no single failure leaves you without air:
- Breathe from a free-flowing reg if needed
- Switch to your own octopus
- Share air from your buddy's alternate
- Ascend slowly and end the dive
Prevention through good gear care
Most failures are prevented long before the dive. Well-serviced regulators, rinsed in fresh water and checked before every entry, almost never let you down. A quick pre-dive breathing test confirms everything works.
Renting or diving with well-maintained gear from a reputable center is one of the simplest ways to keep problems away.

The golden rule: keep ascending
Whatever the malfunction, the safe response almost always ends the same way: signal your buddy, secure a source of air, and ascend slowly to end the dive. A regulator problem is a reason to surface calmly, not to rush.
Never hold your breath during any of this, even a free flow. Keep breathing or exhaling gently so expanding air can always escape your lungs as you rise.
