Diving and pregnancy

Among the many gray areas in diving medicine, pregnancy is refreshingly clear. Because the effect of dissolved nitrogen and pressure changes on a developing baby is not fully understood, the medical consensus is unanimous and cautious: do not scuba dive while pregnant. This is one recommendation with no debate behind it. The good news is that Isla Fuerte still offers plenty of ways to enjoy the sea, and the guidance is simple to follow once you understand the reasoning.

Why the caution

During a dive, nitrogen dissolves into your tissues under pressure. The concern is that this nitrogen, and the tiny bubbles that can form during ascent, may cross the placenta and affect a fetus that cannot manage decompression the way an adult can.

Because we cannot ethically study this in pregnant divers, we lack safety data. In medicine, absence of proof of safety, combined with a plausible serious risk, means we do not take the chance.

It applies from the start

The recommendation holds throughout pregnancy, including the earliest weeks when organs are forming and often before some people know they are pregnant. If you are trying to conceive or think you might be pregnant, it is wisest to pause scuba diving.

There is no known safe depth or duration, so the guideline is simply to abstain rather than to limit.

The good news: enjoy the surface

Snorkeling and floating over the reef from the surface remain wonderful options, since they involve no compressed air or pressure changes at depth. You can still see the colors, the fish and the clear Caribbean water.

Always confirm with your own doctor, who knows your pregnancy, before any water activity, and stay well within easy, calm conditions.

Every service includes gear, insurance and boat transfer.

Plan to return

This is a pause, not the end of your diving. After pregnancy, once your doctor confirms you have recovered, you can return to the water and pick up right where you left off.

Many divers use this time to complete theory or plan a future trip. The 29 dive sites of Isla Fuerte will still be waiting for you.

Important

This is general educational information, not medical advice. Always complete the medical questionnaire honestly, dive within your training and, if in doubt, consult a diving physician or contact DAN (Divers Alert Network). In an emergency in Colombia, the nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Coveñas.
