One of the most common worries from new divers is whether they are athletic enough. The reassuring truth is that diving is gentle and buoyant, so you do not need to be an athlete to enjoy it. What you do need is reasonable general health, comfort in the water and honesty about any medical conditions. Fit to dive means healthy and comfortable, not super-fit. Here is what really matters, and how our beginner reefs make a first dive accessible to most people.
Why you do not need to be an athlete
Underwater, buoyancy supports your weight and good technique means moving slowly and breathing calmly. Most recreational dives involve gentle finning, not hard exertion, so raw strength and stamina are less important than people expect.
The bigger factors are relaxation, steady breathing and comfort in the water. A calm, comfortable diver uses far less energy than an anxious one.

What "reasonable health" covers
You should be able to handle moderate activity like climbing back onto the boat, walking in gear and swimming a short distance if needed. You do not need to run marathons, but you should not have untreated conditions that a sudden exertion could expose.
Basic swimming ability and comfort with your face in the water matter more than speed. If you are unsure, a beginner course builds these skills gradually.
The medical questionnaire
Everyone completes a standard medical questionnaire before diving. It asks about heart, lung, ear and other conditions, and answering honestly is essential. A yes to any item does not mean no diving, it simply means a doctor should confirm you are cleared.
The form exists to keep you safe, not to catch you out. Some conditions just need a physician's sign-off first.

When to get a checkup
Consider a medical review if you are older, have been inactive for a long time, are significantly overweight, or have any heart, lung or other chronic condition. It is a small step that greatly reduces risk.
- Answer the questionnaire honestly.
- Get clearance for any flagged condition.
- Build water comfort before your first dive.
- Tell your guide how you feel.

Important
This is general educational information, not medical advice. Always complete the medical questionnaire honestly, dive within your training and, if in doubt, consult a diving physician or contact DAN (Divers Alert Network). In an emergency in Colombia, the nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Coveñas.
