The PADI Open Water Diver course is the certification that turns a curious beginner into a real, independent scuba diver. It is the most popular diving qualification in the world, and once you earn it you can plan and make dives with a buddy to a depth of 18 meters, rent equipment and dive at centers everywhere. The course is famously beginner-friendly, structured so you build confidence one small step at a time. This guide explains what it covers, who can take it and how long it lasts.
The three phases of the course
Open Water is built from three connected phases, each preparing you for the next. You never do something in the sea you have not first practiced somewhere calm.
- Knowledge development: five theory sections online covering pressure, gear, planning and safety.
- Confined water dives: five sessions mastering skills in a pool or shallow water.
- Open water dives: four dives in the sea where you demonstrate everything you have learned.

Skills you will master
The skills are practical and confidence-building, not acrobatics. By the end they feel automatic.
- Clearing water from your mask and recovering your regulator.
- Controlling your buoyancy so you hover effortlessly.
- Sharing air with a buddy in an out-of-air scenario.
- Planning a dive and monitoring your air and depth.
Who can take it and how long
The entry requirements are gentle. You must be at least 10 years old (with Junior versions for 10 to 14 year olds and depth limits for younger divers), able to swim and in reasonable health.
Most people complete the whole course in three to four days. Doing the online theory before you travel shortens your in-water time and lets you spend more of your trip actually diving instead of studying indoors. You will also complete a short swim assessment, floating for a few minutes and swimming a couple of lengths unaided, which is about comfort in the water rather than speed or technique.

Your Open Water dives on living reefs
At Nautilus your four open water dives happen on the gentle beginner reefs of Isla Fuerte, sites like Rosa Vieja and El Museo, where the water is warm, clear and calm. As a PADI center with small groups and 29 dive sites, we give you the space and attention to turn nervous first breaths into real confidence.
