What is the Drift Diver specialty?

The PADI Drift Diver specialty teaches you to relax and let a gentle current do the work, gliding over the reef as though you were flying. Drift diving is one of the most exhilarating and least tiring ways to dive, because you barely kick. It also brings you close to the pelagic action, since current often means nutrients, and nutrients mean fish. The course is about reading water, staying with your group and enjoying the ride safely.

What drift diving feels like

Once you are neutrally buoyant and the current takes hold, the sensation is closer to flight than swimming. The reef scrolls past below you while you conserve energy and air, covering far more ground than you could by finning.

Because you move with the water rather than against it, drift dives are relaxing even for divers who find kicking tiring.

Small groups and certified PADI instructors on every dive.

Skills and gear

You learn to plan an entry and exit around the current, to stay together as a group so no one is left behind, and to use a surface marker buoy so the boat can track you and pick you up downstream.

Buoyancy control is key, because you steer with small adjustments rather than powerful kicks. The course usually involves two dives.

Who can take it

You need a PADI Open Water certification and to be at least 12 years old. Drift diving suits divers who want to explore bigger stretches of reef with less effort, and who enjoy the feeling of movement.

Because you rely on your buddy and the boat crew, communication and calm are more important than strength.

Reading the water

A big part of drift diving is understanding the current before you get in. Your instructor or the boat crew reads the surface, the tide and local knowledge to choose the entry point and predict where you will surface.

Underwater, you learn to notice signs like the angle of sea fans and the direction fish are facing, which tell you how the water is moving. Working with the current instead of fighting it is the whole skill, and it makes each dive feel smooth and unhurried.
