The PADI Deep Diver specialty is for certified divers who want to explore beyond the 18 to 30 meter range of their earlier training. Deeper sites hold dramatic walls, larger animals and shipwrecks that shallower divers never see. The course teaches you to plan and manage these dives with confidence, respecting the extra care that pressure and gas consumption demand. By the end you are certified to dive to the recreational limit of 40 meters.
What you learn
The course covers deep dive planning, gas management, and the effects that depth has on your body and your equipment. You practice using a reference line for descent and ascent, and you monitor your air and no-decompression limits more closely than on a shallow reef.
You also learn to recognize and respond to nitrogen narcosis, the mild, reversible effect that pressure can have on judgment at depth.

The four training dives
Deep Diver includes four dives, progressively deeper, ending near 40 meters. On these dives you complete practical exercises like a timed task at depth to feel narcosis for yourself, and a check of how your color perception changes as light fades.
Your instructor is beside you the whole time, and every dive is planned with generous safety margins.
Who should take it
You need a PADI Advanced Open Water certification, or equivalent, and to be at least 15 years old. Deep Diver is a natural next step if you enjoyed the deep adventure dive during your Advanced course and want to go further.
Good buoyancy and calm breathing matter more here than raw experience, so the specialty rewards divers who take their time.

The reward of depth
Depth changes the whole character of a dive. Below 30 meters the light turns a deep blue, big pelagic animals cruise past more often, and dramatic walls and drop-offs replace the flat reef top. Many divers describe it as calmer and more otherworldly.
The specialty also builds the discipline that makes you a better diver everywhere: tighter planning, closer gas monitoring and a habit of always leaving yourself a generous reserve. Those habits pay off on every future dive, shallow or deep.
Go deep at Isla Fuerte
Isla Fuerte is one of Colombia's best-kept dive secrets, and its deeper sites are ideal for this specialty. Bushnell drops into advanced open-water walls where whitetip and hammerhead sharks patrol, exactly the kind of place a Deep Diver certification unlocks.
At Nautilus you train in warm 27 to 29 degree water, in small groups, with certified instructors who know every meter of these reefs. Take a look at our courses and dives and come earn your depth here.
