FAQ

What is the best month to go scuba diving?

There is no single best month to scuba dive worldwide, because the ideal time is set by each region's dry season, water temperature and visibility. As a rule, you want the calmest seas and the clearest water, which usually means a destination's dry, low-wind months. In the Caribbean, the driest and calmest stretches tend to fall in the first half of the year and again in early autumn. The good news is that warm, tropical destinations offer excellent diving almost year-round, so you can usually find great conditions somewhere no matter when you can travel.

Chase the dry season

Rain and wind stir up sediment and churn the surface, which lowers visibility and makes boat rides bumpier. The dry season in any tropical region usually delivers the flat seas and clear water divers dream of.

Before you book, check the local dry months rather than assuming summer is best everywhere. The calendar that matters is the destination's, not your home country's.

Water temperature and marine life

Some months line up with special events, like coral spawning, whale migrations or plankton blooms that attract big animals. If a particular species is on your list, time your trip to its season.

Warmer water also means less exposure protection and longer comfort in the water. Tropical destinations keep temperatures pleasant across most of the year.

Crowds and prices

Peak dive season brings the best conditions but also the most divers and the highest prices. Shoulder months often offer a sweet spot of good visibility with fewer crowds and better value.

If you are flexible, ask a local operator which weeks balance conditions and quiet. They know the micro-seasons that never make it into guidebooks.
