FAQ

What is the minimum age to dive?

The minimum age to start scuba diving is 10 years old, both for the Discover Scuba minicourse and for the Junior Open Water certification. Young divers dive with shallower depth limits and extra supervision, so the experience is matched carefully to their age and comfort. Diving is a wonderful family activity, and Isla Fuerte, with its warm, calm, shallow reefs, is one of the best places to share it across generations. If your child is younger than 10, snorkeling over the same reefs is a fantastic way to get them excited for the day they can take their first breath underwater.

Why the limit is 10

The age minimum exists so that young divers have the physical size, attention span and comprehension to manage basic skills safely. Below that age, the equipment and the concepts are simply a poor fit.

PADI sets these standards worldwide, and we follow them exactly. It is one of the reasons diving with a certified center matters.

Shallower limits for young divers

Divers aged 10 and 11 stay in shallow water, and junior divers up to 14 have reduced depth limits compared with adults. These limits keep young divers well inside a comfortable, low-stress range.

Happily, the shallow reefs are also the most colorful and full of life, so young divers get the best of Isla Fuerte, not a compromise.

Family plans that work for everyone

We design family days that mix diving, snorkeling and beach time, so every age has a great time on the same trip. Parents can dive while younger children snorkel, then everyone regroups on the boat.

Tell us your family's ages and interests and we will build the day around them. Nobody has to sit on the sand while the others have all the fun.

Getting kids started

The Discover Scuba minicourse from age 10 is the perfect first taste, in shallow water with a certified instructor at their side the entire time. Curiosity and calm matter far more than experience.

See our courses and dives or browse the interactive dive map to plan a family trip. A first dive at the right age can spark a lifelong love of the ocean.

No upper age limit

There is no upper age limit for recreational diving, only a simple health check to confirm you are fit for it. Plenty of divers start in their fifties, sixties and beyond, drawn by the calm and weightlessness of the reef.

If you have a medical condition, a doctor's clearance is usually all that is needed. The ocean has room for every generation.
