Enriched Air Nitrox is one of the most popular specialty certifications in diving, and for good reason: breathing air with a higher oxygen percentage lets you stay down longer and often feel less tired afterward. It does not let you go deeper, and it is not the same as the pure-oxygen myths some people imagine. The Nitrox course is short, mostly theory, and adds a genuinely useful tool to your diving. This guide explains what Nitrox is, what it does and does not do, and who benefits most.
What Nitrox actually is
Regular air is about 21 percent oxygen. Enriched Air Nitrox simply raises that percentage, most commonly to 32 or 36 percent, with correspondingly less nitrogen.
Because your body absorbs nitrogen during a dive, and nitrogen is what limits your bottom time, breathing less of it lets you stay down longer within safe limits. The oxygen boost is modest and carefully controlled, nothing like the pure oxygen used in very different technical contexts. The higher oxygen content also introduces a maximum operating depth, which is exactly why the course spends time teaching you to analyze your tank and set that limit correctly before every dive.

The real benefits
Nitrox is especially loved by divers who do several dives a day, which is exactly why it is so popular on dive trips and liveaboards. The advantages are practical.
- Longer no-decompression limits, meaning more time on the reef.
- Shorter surface intervals between repetitive dives.
- Many divers report feeling less fatigued after a day of diving.
- A bigger safety margin on shallow, repetitive dives.
What the course covers
The Nitrox specialty is one of the quickest certifications you can earn, and it can even be completed without any dives, though practicing is ideal. It is mostly about knowledge and gas handling.
- Understanding oxygen limits and why you cannot simply go deeper.
- Analyzing the oxygen content of your tank before every dive.
- Setting your dive computer for the correct blend.
- Planning dives using enriched air tables or a computer.
