Discover Scuba Diving is the easiest and safest way to try scuba for the very first time, with no course, no card and no prior experience required. In a single session, often just one morning, you go from never having breathed underwater to gliding over a living reef beside a professional instructor. It is not a certification but a genuine taster, perfect for anyone curious whether diving is for them. This guide explains exactly how it works and who can do it.
How the experience unfolds
The whole thing is designed to be gentle and reassuring, with your instructor beside you the entire time. There is nothing to memorize and no exam.
- A short, friendly briefing on the equipment and a few hand signals.
- Learning three simple safety skills in shallow water where you can stand.
- A guided dive along the reef, usually to a shallow depth of up to 12 meters.
- Plenty of time to simply float, look around and enjoy.

Who can try it
The requirements are wonderfully simple, which is the whole point of the program. It is built for complete beginners.
- From age 10, with an adult for younger participants.
- Reasonable health and comfort in the water.
- No swimming certificate or diving experience required.
- A short medical questionnaire completed beforehand.
Does it count toward a certification?
Discover Scuba Diving is not a certification, so it does not by itself let you dive independently or rent gear. Think of it as a first date with the ocean rather than a marriage.
That said, if you fall in love with it, the skills you practice can often be credited toward a full Open Water Diver course, giving you a head start. Many lifelong divers trace their entire journey back to one magical Discover Scuba morning. It is also a wonderful low-commitment way to test whether diving suits you before investing the time and money in a full certification, which is why so many people try it while on holiday near a warm, shallow reef.
