What does a Divemaster do?

A Divemaster is the first professional rating in recreational diving, the step where a hobby can become a career. Divemasters guide certified divers, supervise dive activities and assist instructors during courses. It is a role built on leadership, safety and deep familiarity with the underwater world. If you have fallen in love with diving and dream of working in it, the PADI Divemaster course is where that journey begins.

Guiding certified divers

The most visible part of the job is leading certified divers on tours of a dive site. A Divemaster briefs the group, plans the dive around depth, time and conditions, and leads the way while keeping everyone safe and together.

This means knowing the local sites intimately, from the best route to the marine life you are likely to see.

Supervising and assisting

Divemasters also supervise dive activities from the boat or shore and assist instructors during training courses, helping students in confined and open water.

They manage logistics, check that gear is ready and keep a watchful eye on conditions, so instructors can focus on teaching. It is a role of quiet, constant responsibility.

How you get there

To start the Divemaster course you need to be a certified Rescue Diver with Emergency First Response training, at least 18 years old, and to have logged a good number of dives. The course develops your dive theory, rescue skills, stamina and leadership through hands-on internship.

It is demanding, but for many divers it is the most rewarding step they ever take.

Every service includes gear, insurance and boat transfer.

Life as a Divemaster

Being a Divemaster is as much a lifestyle as a job. You spend your days by the water, know the local reefs better than anyone, and share the joy of diving with people experiencing it for the first time. It is deeply social and endlessly varied.

It is also real work, with early starts, heavy tanks and constant responsibility for other people's safety. Most Divemasters will tell you the trade is worth it, because few careers let you turn a passion for the ocean into your everyday life.
