Things to do near Coveñas

Coveñas is one of the most popular beach towns on the Colombian Caribbean, a long stretch of calm, shallow water on the Gulf of Morrosquillo. It is where many families from Montería, Medellín and the interior come to unwind. But beyond the main beach, there is more to do around Coveñas than most visitors realize, and one nearby island that turns a beach holiday into a genuine diving adventure. This guide covers both.

The beaches of Coveñas

Coveñas has warm, calm water and gentle waves, which makes it ideal for families and easy swimming. Sectors like Primera Ensenada and Segunda Ensenada each have their own stretch of sand, beach restaurants and space to spread out.

The town is also known for its sunsets over the gulf, when the flat water turns gold. An evening walk along the Coveñas shoreline is one of the simplest pleasures here.

Nearby trips from Coveñas

Coveñas sits right beside Tolú, so it is easy to combine the two. From Tolú you can take boat tours to the San Bernardo archipelago, with stops for snorkeling and the famous islet of Santa Cruz del Islote.

Inland, the mud volcano at San Antero and the mangroves along the gulf make good half-day outings. There is enough around Coveñas to fill several relaxed days.

Practical notes for Coveñas

Coveñas is easiest to reach by road, about two to three hours from Montería and around three from Cartagena. High season runs over Colombian holidays and Semana Santa, when the town fills quickly and prices rise, so book ahead if you travel then.

Good to know for divers: Coveñas is home to the nearest hyperbaric chamber for this part of the coast, an important safety detail if you plan to dive in the region.

The diving escape near Coveñas

The San Bernardo islands are lovely for snorkeling, but the best diving in the wider region is a bit farther out, at Isla Fuerte, eleven kilometers off the Córdoba coast. From Coveñas you continue south to the port of Paso Nuevo and cross by boat to the island.

There you trade day-trip snorkeling for real scuba diving across 29 sites, healthy coral and warm water that stays 27 to 29 degrees all year. It is the natural next step for anyone whose beach days at Coveñas leave them wanting more of the sea.
