Reef conservation at Nautilus

Every dive at Nautilus is meant to leave the reef a little better, not a little worse. We take part in reef monitoring through Reef Check, run coral restoration at Bajo Bonito and carry out lionfish control, so that the same reefs that make this place special stay alive for the next generation of divers. As a PADI AWARE center, conservation is not a side project here, it is the point. This is how your visit becomes part of protecting the reef.

Monitoring with Reef Check

Through the Reef Check program we regularly survey our sites, tracking coral health, fish populations and any signs of stress. That data tells us what is thriving and what needs help, turning intuition into real evidence.

Because Isla Fuerte sees so few divers, our reefs are an unusually clean baseline, which makes the monitoring genuinely valuable for the wider Caribbean. See the sites we watch on our interactive dive map.

Growing coral at Bajo Bonito

At Bajo Bonito we run active coral restoration, growing fragments and helping the reef rebuild where it has been damaged. Watching new coral take hold is one of the most hopeful things you can witness underwater.

This work sits alongside the submerged Zenú museum at the same site, so a single dive there is nature, culture and conservation at once. Learn more through our experiences.

Controlling the lionfish

The lionfish is a beautiful but invasive predator that eats its way through native reef life with no natural check. We carry out controlled removals to keep its numbers down and give local species room to recover.

It is one of the most direct ways diving can help a reef. Every lionfish removed protects countless juvenile fish that keep the ecosystem in balance.

Join in

As a PADI AWARE center we map and protect our sites and share what we learn with the island, so conservation stays a community effort rather than an outside imposition. Divers who care are our best allies.

You can help simply by diving responsibly, or go further and donate or join a conservation day. Ask us how when you book your courses and dives, or read more guides to prepare.

A reef worth protecting

Coral reefs across the Caribbean are under pressure from warming water, pollution and overuse, which makes a healthy reef like Isla Fuerte's genuinely precious. Protecting it now is far easier than trying to rebuild it later.

Every responsible diver who visits becomes part of that protection, funding the monitoring, restoration and lionfish control that keep the reef alive. Your dive is not neutral here, it actively helps tip the balance toward recovery.
