Becoming a scuba diving instructor is the goal for divers who want to teach others and make the ocean their workplace. It sits at the top of the recreational training ladder, reached after Divemaster through an Instructor Development Course and a final independent examination. The journey takes commitment, but it rewards you with the ability to certify new divers anywhere in the world. This guide maps out the full route, from your first dive to standing in front of your own students.
The full ladder to instructor
You cannot skip steps on the way to teaching, and each level builds real capability. Here is the standard progression.
- Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver.
- Divemaster, your first professional rating.
- Instructor Development Course (IDC), which includes the Assistant Instructor level.
- The Instructor Examination (IE), an independent two-day assessment.

Inside the Instructor Development Course
The IDC is where you learn not just to dive well but to teach well, which is a different skill entirely. It is intensive and focused on presentation and standards.
- How to structure and deliver classroom and confined water lessons.
- How to demonstrate skills slowly and clearly for students.
- Diving standards, safety and risk management in depth.
- How to conduct open water training dives safely.
Requirements and what comes after
To start the IDC you generally need to be at least 18, hold Divemaster, have around 60 to 100 logged dives and be a certified diver for at least six months. A recent medical and current first aid credentials are also required.
After passing the IE you are a certified Open Water Scuba Instructor, able to teach and certify students. From there you can add specialty instructor ratings, become a Master Instructor and eventually train other professionals. Teaching diving is genuinely a global career, and a good instructor rating lets you work at dive centers across the tropics, from the Caribbean to Southeast Asia, meeting new people and diving beautiful sites as part of the job.

Build your foundation in Isla Fuerte
