Beginner scuba divers stay shallow, and that is by design. On a first-time Discover Scuba experience, you typically stay above 12 meters, while a newly certified Open Water diver is limited to 18 meters. These depths are more than enough to enjoy the richest, most colorful part of any reef, because the shallows are where sunlight, coral and fish life are most abundant. Depth is not what makes a dive special, and experienced divers often prefer the shallows for exactly that reason. As a beginner, you gain depth gradually as you build skills, always staying comfortably within your training.
First dives stay shallow
A Discover Scuba dive usually keeps you above 12 meters, in bright, warm, easy conditions where an instructor is always within arm's reach. This shallow range lets you focus on breathing and enjoying the reef without added complexity.
It is the ideal depth to fall in love with diving. Nothing about a shallow dive is a compromise on beauty, and most first-timers finish grinning and asking to go again.

Open Water reaches 18 meters
Once you earn your Open Water certification, your limit extends to 18 meters, opening up more sites and terrain. That range covers the vast majority of the world's best recreational reefs.
You grow into it with training, not all at once. Each dive builds the comfort that makes the next one easy.
Why shallow is the best part
Sunlight fades quickly with depth, so the shallows hold the most vivid colors, the healthiest coral and the busiest fish life. Your air also lasts much longer up there.
Many seasoned divers deliberately choose shallow reefs for these reasons. Depth impresses beginners, but the shallows keep divers coming back.

Growing your depth safely
If you want to go deeper later, the Advanced course extends your range to 30 meters with proper training. Depth is earned step by step, matched to real skills and experience.
There is never any pressure to descend beyond where you feel at ease. The best divers respect their own limits.
