FAQ

Can you wear glasses while scuba diving?

You cannot wear regular eyeglasses while scuba diving, because they do not fit under a dive mask, but that does not mean poor eyesight keeps you out of the water. Divers with vision correction have several excellent options: prescription dive masks, stick-on corrective lenses, or simply wearing contact lenses under a standard mask. Many divers are surprised to learn that things underwater already appear about a third larger and closer than they really are, thanks to the way water and the mask refract light. So if your eyesight is only mildly imperfect, you may see the reef beautifully with no correction at all.

Why glasses do not work

A dive mask needs to seal tightly against your face to keep water out, and the arms of eyeglasses break that seal. There is simply no room for frames inside the mask.

Fortunately, the solutions for divers are simple and widely available. Needing vision correction is never a reason to skip diving.

Prescription masks

Many mask models accept prescription lenses, either standard corrective inserts or lenses ground to your exact prescription. This gives you clear vision without contacts or extra fuss.

Optical dive shops can help you match a mask to your needs. It is a one-time investment many divers find well worth it.

Contact lenses work well

Soft contact lenses are a popular and easy option, worn under a standard mask with no special gear. Keeping your eyes closed while clearing the mask helps ensure you never lose one.

Bring a spare pair just in case, and you are set. Countless divers use contacts on every dive without a problem.

Underwater magnification

Water and your mask together magnify objects, making everything look roughly a third bigger and closer than it is. For mildly imperfect eyesight, this natural effect can be enough on its own, and small creatures become surprisingly easy to spot.

It also means the reef's colors and details are wonderfully vivid up close. Many divers with slight prescriptions never bother with correction at all, and simply enjoy the view as it is.
