Health & safety

Can you scuba dive with a new tattoo?

A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound, so diving too soon carries real, avoidable risks. The good news is that the wait is short and the rule is simple: let it heal first. Understanding why protects both your new artwork and your body from infection and irritation.

Why a new tattoo is a wound

Tattooing breaks the skin thousands of times to deposit ink, leaving the surface raw and healing for the first couple of weeks. Submerging it in ocean water, which naturally contains bacteria, exposes that open skin to infection.

Pool water is not much better, since chlorine can irritate the fresh tattoo and fade the ink. Either way, immersion before the skin closes is a gamble not worth taking.

How long to wait

Most artists and dive professionals suggest waiting until the tattoo is fully healed, which usually means:

  • At least 2 weeks for the surface skin to close
  • Often 3 to 4 weeks for larger or deeper pieces
  • Longer if you see any redness, oozing or scabbing

Follow your tattoo artist's aftercare advice, and only dive once the area looks and feels like normal skin.

Protect it once you do dive

Even after healing, a new tattoo is still settling. Rinse it with fresh water after each dive, avoid scrubbing it under a tight wetsuit seam, and apply reef-safe sunscreen or cover it on the surface between dives.

Sun is the biggest enemy of tattoo longevity, so shade and protection on the boat matter as much as the water itself.

Watch for signs of trouble

If you have dived and then notice any of these around a recent tattoo, treat it seriously and see a doctor:

  • Spreading redness, warmth or swelling
  • Pus, oozing or a bad smell
  • Increasing pain rather than steady healing
  • Fever or feeling generally unwell

Caught early, a skin infection is easy to treat, so do not ignore these warning signs after time in the water.

This is general educational information, not medical advice. Always complete the medical questionnaire honestly, dive within your training and, if in doubt, consult a diving physician or contact DAN (Divers Alert Network). In an emergency in Colombia, the nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Coveñas.
