FAQ

Can I dive if I'm not very fit?

Most likely yes, you can dive even if you do not consider yourself very fit. Scuba diving is a gentle, low-effort activity: underwater you float weightless, breathe slowly and glide along with almost no exertion. You do not need to be an athlete or a strong swimmer, only reasonably healthy and comfortable in the water. The warm, calm conditions in Isla Fuerte make it one of the easiest places to start. Here is what fitness really matters for, and the one simple step everyone takes before diving.

Diving is gentler than it looks

People often picture diving as strenuous, but underwater it is the opposite. Your equipment makes you neutrally buoyant, so you are not fighting to stay up or down, and your fins do the moving with slow, relaxed kicks. Good divers actually breathe slowly and move as little as possible.

In our 27 to 29°C water there is no cold to fight and no need for heavy suits. Many guests are surprised how calm and effortless a dive feels once they are down.

Where fitness does matter

The moments that ask a bit more of you are usually on the surface, not underwater: a short swim, climbing back onto the boat, or handling gear on land. None of these require athletic fitness, just basic mobility and the ability to move yourself in water.

Conditions like a light current can also add mild effort, but our guides choose calm sites for less confident divers and always plan the dive to match your comfort, never against it.

The medical questionnaire

Before diving, everyone completes a short medical questionnaire. It is not about athletic performance, it flags specific conditions, such as certain heart, lung or ear issues, that interact with the pressure of diving and are worth a doctor's opinion first.

Answer it honestly. For most people it is a simple all-clear. For some, it just means getting a quick sign-off from a physician, and then the reef is open to you exactly like anyone else.

Start easy, build confidence

If you are unsure, the Discover Scuba minicourse is the gentlest possible start: an instructor stays with you the entire time, controlling depth and pace so you can just breathe and enjoy. It is a great way to feel how relaxed diving really is before committing to more.
