FAQ

Are there strong currents in Isla Fuerte?

For the most part, no. The majority of Isla Fuerte's dive sites are calm, with light current or none at all, which is a big part of what makes it such a friendly place to learn and to dive relaxed. Some of our open-water sites can carry more movement, and that is actually a good thing, because current brings nutrients that attract the bigger pelagic life. Either way, our guides read the conditions every day and plan each dive to match your level. Here is what currents are really like here and how we handle them.

Calm reefs are the norm

Most of our reef sites, including gentle spots like Rosa Vieja and El Museo, sit in sheltered water with little to no current. These are the sites we use for beginners, courses and relaxed fun dives, where you can hover and drift along at your own slow pace.

Combined with warm 27 to 29°C water and good visibility, this makes Isla Fuerte one of the more forgiving places to dive in the Colombian Caribbean, especially for newer divers.

When current shows up

Some open-water and deeper sites, like the Bushnell wreck, can have more water movement depending on the day. This is not a hazard to avoid so much as a condition to plan for, and it often comes with a reward: currents feed the reef, so these sites attract schooling fish and larger pelagic species.

When current is present, we may run it as a drift dive, letting the water carry you gently along while the guide leads the way. Done right, it is one of the most effortless and exciting kinds of diving.

How our guides plan for it

Every dive starts with our guides reading the day: wind, tide and how the water is moving at each site. They then choose a site and a plan that match your certification and comfort, keeping less experienced divers at the calmest spots.

On any dive with current we give a clear briefing beforehand, explaining the direction, the plan and the signals, so you always dive with the current and never fight against it. Nobody is ever taken somewhere beyond their level.

Diving matched to your level

Because we have 29 dive sites to choose from, there is almost always a spot that suits the conditions and your experience on any given day. Beginners get calm reefs, confident divers can seek out the livelier open-water sites, and everyone dives within their comfort.
