Why Isla Fuerte is the Caribbean secret near Cartagena and Coveñas

Millions of travelers pass through Cartagena and along the beaches of Coveñas every year, yet only a fraction ever hear of Isla Fuerte, a small coral island hiding just off the coast of Córdoba between them. This is Colombia's best-kept Caribbean secret: a reef-ringed island with Zenú heritage, warm clear water and almost none of the crowds that define the region's famous spots. Here is why Isla Fuerte deserves a place on your map, and how it sits in relation to the places you already know.

Where Isla Fuerte sits between the famous spots

Isla Fuerte lies 11 km off the coast of Córdoba, roughly between the tourist magnet of Cartagena to the north and the popular beach town of Coveñas on the Gulf of Morrosquillo. It is reached by boat from Paso Nuevo, near the municipality of San Bernardo del Viento.

That location is the whole point. It is close enough to the region's main hubs to fold into a coastal trip, yet far enough offshore to escape the crowds. While Cartagena bustles and Coveñas fills with beachgoers, Isla Fuerte stays quiet.

Every service includes gear, insurance and boat transfer.

An island born from geology and history

Isla Fuerte is unusual: a coral island on the continental shelf, born from the clash of tectonic plates that pushed the reef platform toward the surface. This geological origin is why living coral surrounds it so richly today.

Its human story runs deep too. The island was a burial ground for Zenú chiefs, and later five families from Barú settled it, shaping the small community that lives there now. Above water you will find the famous walking Pisonia tree, El Árbol que Camina; below it, a submerged Zenú museum at the Bajo Bonito dive site.

Why it stays a secret

Isla Fuerte remains under the radar for a simple reason: it takes a little more effort to reach than Cartagena's or Coveñas's beaches. There is no airport and no big resort strip, only a boat ride and a small island community. That friction is precisely what has protected it.

The payoff is a place where the reefs are among the best preserved of the continental Caribbean, the beaches are empty, and the nights are dark and full of stars. It rewards travelers who are willing to go just a bit further.

What waits beneath the surface

The real magic of Isla Fuerte is underwater. The island has 29 dive sites for every level, from the gentle beginner reefs of Rosa Vieja and El Museo to the advanced walls of Bushnell, where whitetips and even hammerheads cruise past. At Bajo Bonito, a coral restoration project grows alongside the submerged Zenú museum.

The water stays between 27 and 29 degrees all year, with the best visibility from March to May and September to October. It is a living, protected reef, monitored through Reef Check and cared for as a PADI AWARE conservation site.
