Marine life

Where to dive with sea lions

Diving with sea lions is pure joy: these curious, playful mammals somersault around divers, nibble fins and zoom past like underwater puppies. They gather at cool, food-rich coastlines and islands where their colonies breed. Several destinations offer world-class, reliable encounters. Here is where to find them, when to go, and why these particular animals are not part of the warm Caribbean reef, plus what plays that role at Isla Fuerte.

The puppies of the sea

Sea lions are playful, intelligent marine mammals that often approach divers out of pure curiosity, especially the young ones. They blow bubbles, mirror your movements and can be wonderfully interactive.

Big males can be territorial during breeding season, so keep your distance from bulls and beaches, and let the youngsters come to you.

The best places to dive with them

  • La Paz (Los Islotes), Mexico: a famous, friendly sea lion colony.
  • Galápagos, Ecuador: playful sea lions on almost every dive.
  • Hornby Island, Canada: winter Steller sea lions.
  • South Australia and New Zealand: Australian and Hooker's sea lions.
  • Monterey, California: California sea lions in the kelp.

When to go

La Paz is superb from around August to October, when the water is warm and the pups are boisterous. Galápagos delivers year-round, with cooler plankton-rich months boosting overall marine life. Cooler destinations like Canada peak in winter.

Many colonies close areas during pupping season to protect the animals, so always follow local guidance and give breeding sites space.

Why not the Caribbean

Sea lions belong to cool, productive coastlines, not warm tropical reefs, so they are not part of the Caribbean fauna. The Caribbean once had its own monk seal, but it is now extinct, so there is no seal or sea lion encounter to be had on these reefs.

What the warm Caribbean offers instead is a completely different kind of playful, curious animal life on the reef itself.

Curious characters at Isla Fuerte

You will not meet a sea lion at Isla Fuerte, but you will meet plenty of curious characters: inquisitive turtles that circle back for another look, playful reef fish and eagle rays gliding past like they own the place. It is warm-water wonder on some of the best-preserved reefs of the continental Caribbean.
