Where to dive with manta rays

Few underwater encounters compare to a manta ray gliding overhead, its wings spanning up to seven meters and blotting out the sun. Mantas are intelligent, curious plankton feeders that gather at cleaning stations and feeding grounds around the tropics. This guide covers the world's best manta destinations, the best time to visit each, and which graceful rays you can actually see on the reefs of Isla Fuerte.

Meeting a manta

The reef manta and the larger oceanic manta are gentle giants with no sting and no threat to divers. They feed on plankton and visit cleaning stations where small fish pick parasites from their skin, which is where divers get the longest, closest views.

Mantas are famously curious and will sometimes circle back for repeated passes over a still, calm diver.

The best places to dive with them

  • Kona, Hawaii: the legendary night dive with feeding mantas.
  • The Maldives: cleaning stations and the famous Hanifaru Bay feeding frenzy.
  • Raja Ampat and Komodo, Indonesia: reliable reef manta sites.
  • Socorro (Revillagigedo), Mexico: huge, interactive oceanic mantas.
  • Yap, Micronesia: year-round manta channels.

When to go

Hanifaru Bay in the Maldives peaks around May to November on the southwest monsoon plankton bloom. Socorro's liveaboard season runs November to May. Kona's night dive works year-round. As always, aligning your trip with the local plankton season stacks the odds in your favor.

Keep low, stay off the cleaning station, and never chase a manta; let it choose the encounter.

Rays in the Colombian Caribbean

Giant mantas are mostly a Pacific and remote-atoll spectacle, and they are only rarely seen in the western Caribbean. But the Caribbean has its own beautiful rays. The spotted eagle ray soars through the blue like a bird, and the southern stingray glides across sandy bottoms and reef edges.

These are the rays you will realistically meet on a Colombian reef, and they are unforgettable in their own right.

Fly with eagle rays at Isla Fuerte

The spotted eagle ray is so beloved here that it inspired the Nautilus logo. On the reefs of Isla Fuerte you can watch these winged rays sweep past the walls and sandy slopes, a homegrown version of the manta magic that draws divers around the world.

Come find them with us. Nautilus is a PADI center on one of the best-kept dive secrets of the continental Caribbean; see our experiences and the interactive dive map.
