A night dive turns a reef you already know into a completely different world. After dark the daytime fish tuck away to sleep and the night shift takes over: octopus prowl and hunt, lobsters walk out into the open, corals extend their tentacles to feed, and the beam of your torch lifts colors from the dark that you never see by daylight. It is widely considered one of the most magical experiences in all of diving. Here is what a night dive is actually like and how we run it safely in Isla Fuerte.
A reef that comes alive
The most striking thing about a night dive is how busy the reef becomes. Predators that hide by day come out to hunt, so you might watch an octopus change color as it stalks across the coral, or a moray eel out swimming in the open.
Corals that look like rock in daylight bloom with feeding polyps at night, and your torch reveals reds and oranges that sunlight filters out at depth. It genuinely feels like visiting a different site altogether.

How a night dive works
You carry a primary dive torch and a small backup light, and you learn a set of light signals to stay in touch with your buddy and guide, since normal hand signals need to be lit by the beam. We keep groups small and everyone stays close together.
The dive itself is usually shallow and relaxed, at a familiar site chosen for calm conditions. Moving slowly and keeping your light steady is all it takes to feel completely at ease in the dark.
What you need to join
Night diving asks for a little foundation. You need to be a certified diver, and we require you to have done at least one local fun dive with us first, in daylight, so you already know the site and are comfortable with our team and the conditions.
That daytime dive also lets our guides confirm your buoyancy and comfort, which matter more at night. Once that box is ticked, the night dive is open to you.

A magical way to end the day
There is something special about slipping into the warm 27 to 29°C water as the light fades and watching the reef transform. Many divers rank their first night dive among the most memorable experiences they have ever had underwater.
