The giant stride is the most iconic way divers enter the water, that confident big step off the back of a boat or a dock. It looks dramatic, but it is designed to be safe and gentle, keeping your mask and regulator in place while you drop cleanly into the sea. Learning to do it calmly turns a moment that feels intimidating into a small ritual you actually enjoy. On the boat rides out from Paso Nuevo to Isla Fuerte, this simple move is your doorway into the reef.
What it looks like
A giant stride is exactly what the name suggests: you stand at the edge with your gear on, take one large step forward, and let gravity carry you into the water feet first. Your legs stay apart as you fall, which slows your descent and keeps you upright when you hit the surface.
The step works best from a stable platform where the water below is deep enough and free of obstacles. It is fast, efficient, and lets a whole group enter one after another without fuss.

The steps in order
Doing it well is mostly about preparation. Take a breath, run through the checklist, then commit to a single confident step rather than a hesitant hop.
- Check that the water below is clear and deep enough.
- Fully inflate your BCD so you float the moment you surface.
- Hold your mask and regulator to your face with one hand.
- Hold any dangling hoses or your weight belt with the other.
- Look at the horizon, not down, and step out with a big stride.
- Keep your legs split until you feel yourself stop sinking.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most frequent slip is forgetting to hold the mask, which can send it flying off on impact. Another is looking down at the water, which tends to tip your body forward into an awkward face-first entry.
Stepping too timidly is also a problem, because a small hop can bring your tank or fins into contact with the platform. A single deliberate stride clears the boat cleanly and lands you upright, ready to signal that you are okay.

Your first stride with us
If the idea of stepping off a boat feels big, that is completely normal, and it fades fast with practice. At Nautilus our certified instructors walk you through the entry on land first, then guide you through it in the calm water off Isla Fuerte until it feels routine.
Our boats leave from Paso Nuevo with all gear provided, and beginners often make their first giant stride during a Discover Scuba session. See how a day on the water flows on our experiences page.
