Tolú is the lively heart of the Gulf of Morrosquillo, a beach town famous for its palm-lined boardwalk, its bicycle taxis and its boat trips out to the San Bernardo archipelago. It is a favorite holiday spot for Colombians, and a great base for exploring this stretch of the Caribbean. This guide covers the best things to do in Tolú and San Bernardo, and then points you toward the deeper diving waiting a little farther south at Isla Fuerte.
What to do in Tolú
Tolú's waterfront boardwalk is the center of town life, best explored on one of the colorful bicycle taxis that give the place its character. In the evenings the malecón fills with music, street food and families out for the breeze.
From Tolú you can also visit nearby mangroves and the mud volcano circuit, or simply settle onto the beach with fresh seafood. It is an easy, sociable town built for slow holidays.

Island-hopping in San Bernardo
The San Bernardo archipelago is Tolú's main attraction, a cluster of islands with clear water reached by day-trip boats. Tours usually include snorkeling stops, time on Isla Múcura or Tintipán, and a look at Santa Cruz del Islote, said to be one of the most densely populated islands on earth.
These trips are ideal for snorkeling, swimming and beach time. They give a first taste of just how clear the water gets once you leave the mainland behind.
Getting to Tolú and when to go
Tolú is reachable by road in about two to three hours from Montería and roughly three from Cartagena, with frequent buses. It sits right next to Coveñas, so the two are easy to combine into one trip.
Expect Tolú to be busiest over Colombian holidays, Semana Santa and year-end, when its beaches and boats fill with domestic tourists. Traveling just outside those peaks means calmer beaches and better prices.

From snorkeling to real diving
San Bernardo is wonderful for snorkeling, but if you want to actually scuba dive, the standout reefs are farther out at Isla Fuerte, eleven kilometers off the Córdoba coast. From Tolú you head south to the port of Paso Nuevo and cross by boat to the island.
Isla Fuerte offers 29 dive sites, from gentle beginner reefs to deep walls with sharks and rays, all in warm 27 to 29 degree water. It is the difference between looking down at the reef and diving right into it.
