Diving 101

The buddy system explained

Diving is a team sport, and the buddy system is the simple, powerful idea at the heart of it: nobody dives alone. You and your buddy stay close throughout the dive, keep an eye on each other, and are ready to help if anything goes wrong, from a foggy mask to sharing air in an emergency. Two divers watching out for one another are far safer and more relaxed than either would be solo. On every Nautilus dive our guides run this system for you, keeping the whole group together and accounted for so you can focus on the reef.

Two sets of eyes

The core value of a buddy is redundancy. Underwater, small problems can grow if you face them alone, but a partner spots the strap you did not notice or the gauge you forgot to check.

If your own air supply ever fails, your buddy carries an alternate mouthpiece so you can breathe from their tank and ascend together calmly. That shared safety net is why solo diving is reserved for specially trained experts and why we always pair you up.

The pre-dive buddy check

Before you enter the water, you and your buddy run a quick check of each other's gear. It takes about a minute and catches the small mistakes that are easy to make while gearing up.

  • Check that the BCD inflates and deflates and its hose is connected.
  • Check that weights are in place and can be released quickly if needed.
  • Check the releases and buckles so nothing comes loose underwater.
  • Check air by turning the tank on, taking a breath, and reading the gauge.

Staying together underwater

Once you descend, the rule is to stay within a couple of seconds of your buddy, close enough to reach them quickly. You glance at each other regularly and exchange the OK signal to confirm all is well.

If you ever lose sight of your buddy, the standard procedure is to look around for about a minute, then ascend slowly to reunite at the surface. Agreeing on this plan beforehand means a brief separation never turns into a scare.

How Nautilus runs it

You are never left to manage all of this alone. Our certified guides lead every group, keep the divers close and counted, and quietly monitor everyone's air and comfort throughout the dive.

For newer divers this means you can relax and enjoy calm sites like Rosa Vieja knowing a professional is watching over the whole team. Ready to dive with a buddy and a guide? See the options on our courses and dives page.
