The best places to dive in Colombia

Colombia is the only South American country with coastline on two oceans, which means two completely different diving worlds in one passport. The Pacific offers big pelagic drama and the Caribbean offers warm, clear coral. From the shark cathedrals of Malpelo to the quiet reefs of Isla Fuerte, this is a ranked look at where to dive in Colombia. Whether you want hammerheads or your very first breath underwater, the country delivers, and often with almost nobody else in the water.

The Pacific: big animals, big water

Colombia's Pacific coast is remote, wild and pelagic. These are advanced trips, usually by liveaboard, and the reward is some of the best shark diving on earth.

  • 1. Malpelo: a UNESCO site with schooling scalloped hammerheads, silky sharks and the rare smalltooth sand tiger.
  • 2. Gorgona Island: a former prison island now ringed by reef, rays and whitetips.
  • 3. Bahía Solano and Nuquí: humpback whales pass through from July to October.

The Pacific is cooler and moodier than the Caribbean, but for sheer marine spectacle it is world class.

Isla Fuerte, eleven kilometers off the coast of Córdoba.

The Caribbean: warm, clear coral

The Caribbean side is where most divers begin, with warm water, easy access and living reefs. It suits every level, from first-timers to photographers.

  • 1. Isla Fuerte: 29 quiet dive sites, warm 27 to 29 degree water and some of the best-preserved reef of the continental Caribbean.
  • 2. San Andrés and Providencia: part of a huge seaflower biosphere reserve, with the famous wall and clear blue water.
  • 3. Islas del Rosario, near Cartagena: convenient reefs close to the city.
  • 4. Capurganá and the Darién coast: untouched reefs near the Panama border.

Best for beginners

Not every Colombian site suits a new diver. Malpelo and the Pacific demand experience and can involve strong current and cool water. The Caribbean is far gentler.

For a first course or first dives, the calm, warm, shallow reefs of Isla Fuerte are ideal. Sites like Rosa Vieja and El Museo are gentle beginner gardens where you can find your buoyancy without pressure, then build toward deeper walls as you grow.

Every service includes gear, insurance and boat transfer.

When to go

Timing depends on which coast you choose. The Pacific whale season runs July to October, and Malpelo liveaboards run in defined windows through the year. Plan those trips well ahead.

The Caribbean is diveable year round thanks to steady warm water. On Isla Fuerte, visibility peaks from March to May and again in September and October, when the water turns glassy and the light reaches deep into the coral.

Why we love Isla Fuerte

Malpelo may grab the headlines, but Isla Fuerte is Colombia's best-kept diving secret. It has the reef, the warm water and the marine life, without the crowds, the cost or the long expedition. Bushnell even offers a taste of hammerheads and whitetips for advanced divers.

Nautilus is the island's PADI center, with small groups, included gear and instructors who know all 29 sites. See our courses and dives, plan your stay through our lodging, and discover why Colombia's finest diving might be the one you have never heard of.
