The 15 most beautiful fish in the ocean

Beauty underwater comes in every form: electric color, impossible patterns, fins that ripple like silk. After thousands of dives we still gasp when certain fish drift into view. This is our very subjective countdown of the fifteen most beautiful fish in the sea, from flamboyant reef royalty to shimmering open-water jewels. Many of them, or their close cousins, live on the reefs we dive every week in Isla Fuerte — come meet them on a dive with us.

What makes a fish beautiful

Color is only the start. The most beautiful fish combine pattern, movement and behavior into something that stops you mid-kick. Some dazzle to warn predators, others to blend into the coral, and a few simply to court a mate.

We ranked these on pure visual impact underwater, the way a diver actually meets them. Depth, light and a little luck all shape how spectacular they look on any given dive.

The best-preserved coral reefs of the continental Caribbean.

The top eight

  • Mandarinfish: a tiny psychedelic swirl of orange, green and blue, arguably the most colorful fish alive.
  • Emperor angelfish: royal blue and yellow stripes wrapped around a masked face, pure reef aristocracy.
  • French angelfish: a dark elegant disc with every scale rimmed in gold, calm and photogenic.
  • Queen angelfish: electric blue and yellow with a crown-like spot on its forehead.
  • Regal blue tang: the vivid blue and black "Dory" fish, unmistakable over the coral.
  • Clownfish: orange and white against a swaying anemone, the most beloved face on the reef.
  • Moorish idol: bold black, white and yellow bands trailing a long banner fin.
  • Lionfish: a beautiful, dangerous fan of striped venomous spines.

Seven more stunners

  • Parrotfish: living rainbows with beak-like mouths that scrape the coral and make the sand.
  • Mahi-mahi: a flash of gold, green and blue in the open blue water.
  • Butterflyfish: small bright discs that pair up over the coral for life.
  • Queen triggerfish: turquoise body laced with blue and yellow lines from the eyes.
  • Spotted eagle ray: not a fish in the strict sense, but few things are more beautiful in flight.
  • Fairy basslet: a two-tone purple and gold jewel hovering under ledges.
  • Rock beauty: a compact angelfish in bold black and canary yellow.
Warm, clear water almost all year round.
