The southern stingray is a graceful ray that cruises the sandy bottoms and reef edges, often trailed by small jacks.
How to recognize it
A flat, diamond-shaped gray disc with a long, whip-like tail, often half-buried in the sand.

Where and when to see it
In Isla Fuerte divers regularly spot it at Rosa vieja, Bajo humedo, Canal del ingles, Socorro, Bajo de los pargos, Fondo loco, El planchon, Bajo del medio. Explore every site on our interactive dive map.
Diver's note
The tail carries a venomous barb used only in defense. Never corner a ray or block its escape and it will simply glide away.

Dive with respect
We practice good buoyancy and never touch or chase marine life. Watching an animal behave naturally is the whole point, and it keeps the reef of Isla Fuerte alive for the next diver.
