Moñitos is one of the quiet beach towns strung along the coast of Córdoba, in Colombia's Caribbean. Less famous than Cartagena or Santa Marta, Moñitos and its neighbors offer wide beaches, warm water and a relaxed local pace that travelers in the know quietly love. Its position on the Córdoba coast also makes it a convenient part of the same journey that leads to Isla Fuerte, the coral island just offshore. If you are exploring this stretch of coast, Moñitos is worth knowing.
Where Moñitos is on the map
Moñitos sits on the northern coast of Córdoba, between the Gulf of Morrosquillo and the mouth of the Sinú River. It is a coastal municipality of beaches and small villages, with the towns of Puerto Escondido and San Bernardo del Viento as neighbors along the same shoreline.
From Montería, the capital of Córdoba, Moñitos is a couple of hours by road. The same coastal highway connects it to Coveñas and Tolú to the north and to the launch point for Isla Fuerte to the south, so it fits naturally into a coast-hopping itinerary.

What Moñitos is like
Moñitos is unhurried and genuinely local. Its beaches are long and often nearly empty, backed by coconut palms, and the sea is warm and gentle. Fishermen bring in the day's catch, and simple beachfront kitchens serve fried fish, coconut rice and cold drinks. This is a place to unplug rather than to party.
The town and its surroundings suit travelers who want an authentic Colombian coast without crowds or high prices. It is the kind of stop where you settle into hammock time and let the days blur together.
Things to do along this coast
Beyond simply relaxing on the beach, the Córdoba coast around Moñitos offers plenty. You can visit nearby fishing villages, explore mangrove estuaries by boat, ride horses along the sand, and sample the region's coconut-rich cooking. Puerto Escondido and its beaches are an easy excursion.
What this coast lacks in polished tourist infrastructure it makes up for in space and calm. For many visitors, that is exactly the point, and it makes a fine complement to a few days out on the island.

From the Córdoba coast to Isla Fuerte
The mainland beaches of Moñitos are beautiful, but the coral and clear water are richest offshore. Just south along this same Córdoba coast, boats leave Paso Nuevo for Isla Fuerte, 11 km out to sea, where the reefs are alive and the visibility can be superb.
Nautilus is the PADI dive center on the island, with 29 dive sites, water between 27 and 29 degrees and small groups. If Moñitos gives you the sleepy coastal days, Isla Fuerte gives you the underwater ones. See our experiences and interactive dive map to round out your trip.
