As a rough starting point, most divers need weights equal to about 10 percent of their body weight, but the honest answer is that the right amount is always found by testing in the water, never by a fixed formula. Your ideal weight depends on your body composition, your wetsuit thickness, whether you are in salt or fresh water, and your gear. The goal is to be neutrally buoyant, neither sinking like a stone nor bobbing at the surface, so a proper weight check at the start of a dive matters more than any number. Being correctly weighted is one of the biggest keys to comfort, air efficiency and enjoyment underwater.
The starting estimate
The 10 percent of body weight guideline is only a first guess to get you close. From there, an in-water check dials it in precisely.
Overweighting is a common beginner mistake because it feels safer, but carrying too much lead actually makes diving harder and burns air faster. Less is usually more.

What changes your weight need
Several factors push the number up or down:
- Wetsuit thickness: thicker suits float more, needing more lead
- Salt versus fresh water: salt water is more buoyant
- Body composition: more body fat floats more
- Tank type: aluminum tanks get lighter as air is used
Change any of these and you should re-check your weighting.
The proper weight check
The reliable test is simple: float at the surface holding a normal breath, with an empty BCD. You should float at eye level, then sink slowly as you exhale.
This ensures you can descend easily yet still hold a safety stop near the end of the dive when your tank is light. Your instructor guides you through it on day one.

Why correct weighting matters
Being properly weighted transforms a dive. You hover effortlessly, protect the reef by not crashing into it, and breathe far less air because you are not fighting your buoyancy.
Overweighted divers struggle, tire quickly and often feel unstable. Getting this right is one of the fastest ways to become a better, calmer diver.
