The USAT Liberty at Tulamben, on the northeast coast of Bali, is one of the most accessible and beloved wreck dives in the world. This US Army cargo ship was torpedoed in 1942 and later pushed into the sea by the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung, coming to rest on a sloping black-sand shore. Today it lies just meters from the beach, encrusted in coral and swarming with fish, making it perfect for divers of almost every level. You can walk in from the shore and be exploring a 120-meter shipwreck within minutes.
What makes it special
Few world-class wrecks are reachable straight from the beach, but the Liberty sits in just 5 to 30 meters of water a short swim offshore. That accessibility, combined with its coral-covered hull, makes it a favorite for everyone from first-timers to macro photographers.
The black volcanic sand and the ship's dramatic outline create a scene that feels both eerie and beautiful, especially in the early morning light.

Marine life you may see
The wreck teems with life. Big schools of jacks and bumphead parrotfish sweep the structure, while a resident great barracuda and garden eels patrol the sand.
For macro lovers it is a treasure chest, with pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefish, nudibranchs and frogfish among the coral. Turtles and reef fish complete a scene that changes with every dive.
Level and conditions
The Liberty is beginner-friendly. The shallow parts sit around 5 to 12 meters, ideal for Open Water divers and even Discover Scuba participants, while the deeper stern rewards experienced divers.
Conditions are usually calm with gentle currents, though the shore entry over rounded stones takes a little care. Warm water and generally good visibility make it a relaxed, rewarding dive.

Best time and how to reach it
Tulamben can be dived year-round, with the dry season from April to October offering the calmest, clearest conditions. You reach it by road from the main resort areas of southern Bali, about a two to three hour drive.
Many divers stay overnight in Tulamben to dive the wreck at dawn, when the fish are most active and the site is quiet.
Beginner-friendly diving in Colombia
The Liberty proves that unforgettable diving can be gentle and accessible, and the same is true in the Colombian Caribbean. At Nautilus on Isla Fuerte, beginner reefs like Rosa Vieja and El Museo offer calm, warm and colorful first dives.
