Diving Roatán, Honduras

Roatán is the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands, ringed by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-longest reef system on Earth. It has become one of the Caribbean's best value dive destinations, blending easy walls, healthy coral and famously affordable training. This guide covers the reef, its marine life, and why so many divers earn their first certification here.

What makes it special

The barrier reef runs close to shore, so walls and coral gardens begin just minutes from the beach. Many sites drop from shallow reef tops into deep blue, ideal for both training and exploration.

Roatán is renowned for its value: certifications and dive packages cost far less than at many Caribbean rivals, which makes it a magnet for new and traveling divers alike.

Every service includes gear, insurance and boat transfer.

Marine life

Hawksbill turtles are a common and beloved sight, along with green moray eels, spotted eagle rays, groupers and parrotfish. Seahorses and macro life hide in the coral for patient divers.

Some sites offer encounters with whale sharks in nearby waters and, at a few operations, close experiences with Caribbean reef sharks. Dolphins visit the island's waters too, and night dives reveal octopus, basket stars and hunting lobster along the reef.

Level and conditions

Roatán is beginner-friendly, with sheltered sites, mild currents and warm water making it perfect for first dives and certifications. Advanced divers still find plenty in the deeper walls and channels.

Water is a warm 27 to 29 degrees year round, and visibility is often 20 to 30 meters, so conditions rarely get in the way of learning.

Isla Fuerte, eleven kilometers off the coast of Córdoba.

Best time and how to reach it

Diving is good all year, with the driest, calmest months typically from March to September. The autumn rainy season can reduce visibility but rarely stops diving.

Roatán has an international airport with direct flights from several North American cities, and dive resorts cluster around West End and West Bay.

Learn to dive in Colombia instead

Roatán is loved as a place to get certified affordably, and Isla Fuerte offers the same welcoming path in Colombia. We are a PADI dive center where a Discover Scuba minicourse starts from age 10 and an Open Water certification takes just 3 to 4 days, in warm 27 to 29 degree water among the best-preserved reefs of the continental Caribbean.

Small groups, included gear and turtle-filled reefs make it an ideal first breath. See options on our courses and dives page and plan your stay via lodging.
