Diving Richelieu Rock, Thailand

Richelieu Rock, in the Andaman Sea near Thailand's Surin Islands, is widely regarded as the country's finest dive site. This horseshoe-shaped limestone pinnacle rises from the depths and barely breaks the surface at low tide, its walls carpeted in purple soft coral, anemones and dense fish life. Reputedly discovered by Jacques Cousteau, it is famous both for its swarming marine life and as one of the best places in Thailand to encounter whale sharks. A single dive here can feel like swimming through an aquarium turned up to full volume.

What makes it special

Richelieu Rock is a solitary pinnacle in open water, so it concentrates life the way isolated structures do, drawing schooling fish and predators to one vivid spot. The purple soft coral that covers it gives the rock its unmistakable color.

It is also one of the most reliable whale shark sites in Thailand, adding the thrill of a possible giant to an already rich dive.

Marine life you may see

The pinnacle teems with schooling barracuda, trevally and snapper, plus seahorses, ornate ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp and frogfish for macro lovers. Cuttlefish and moray eels are everywhere.

Whale sharks appear seasonally, and manta rays are an occasional bonus. The mix of tiny critters and large pelagics makes every dive rewarding.

Level and conditions

Currents at Richelieu Rock can be moderate to strong and change direction, so it suits divers with reasonable experience and good buoyancy. An Advanced certification is recommended, though calm days welcome confident Open Water divers with a guide.

Depths range from the surface to around 30 meters, and the water is warm. Because the rock is offshore, sea conditions vary with the season.

Warm, clear water almost all year round.

Best time and how to reach it

The Andaman Sea diving season runs roughly October or November to April or May, when the seas are calm and clear. Richelieu Rock is remote, reached mainly by liveaboard or long day trips from Khao Lak or the Surin and Similan islands.

You fly into Phuket, then travel north to the departure ports. Most divers combine it with the nearby Similan Islands.
