A year of diving: the best destination for every month

Somewhere in the world, every single month, a dive destination is hitting its peak. The secret to a great diving year is matching the calendar to the ocean, chasing the seasons of clear water, calm seas and big-animal migrations. This month-by-month guide is a starting map for the traveling diver who wants to always be somewhere at its best. Use it to plan a whole year around the water.

Start the year in warm, clear water

The early months favor warm, dry-season diving in the northern tropics. January through March often brings excellent visibility and calm seas across much of the Caribbean and the Red Sea.

  • January: dry-season Caribbean reefs, calm and clear.
  • February: Red Sea walls and warm-water macro.
  • March: peak visibility as spring conditions settle in.

These are reliable months to plan around when you want easy, comfortable, high-visibility diving.

Spring into big-animal season

As spring arrives, plankton blooms draw larger animals, and visibility stays strong in many tropical destinations. April and May are classic months for encounters with rays, sharks and other big pelagics.

  • April: manta and mobula aggregations in warm seas.
  • May: whale sharks appearing in plankton-rich waters.
  • Late spring: excellent all-round tropical conditions.

If big animals are your goal, the shoulder months of spring often deliver the best mix of comfort and encounters.

Summer and autumn adventures

Midyear opens up destinations that peak in the warmer, calmer months. June through September is prime time for many Pacific and Indian Ocean sites, as well as seasonal whale activity in some regions.

  • June to August: calm seas and migrating humpback whales in parts of the Pacific.
  • September: returning visibility as summer heat eases.
  • Early autumn: warm water with fewer crowds.

These months reward divers willing to follow the calm-season windows around the globe.

Close the year on quiet reefs

The final months bring some of the best conditions of all in the Caribbean, along with fewer travelers. October through December often means warm water, good visibility and calm seas before the year turns.

  • October: peak Caribbean clarity and warm water.
  • November: quiet reefs before high season.
  • December: warm tropical diving to end the year.

It is a fitting way to close a diving year, on warm, uncrowded reefs at their best.

Any month works on Isla Fuerte

The best part of a year of diving is that one destination stays reliable through all of it. Isla Fuerte, eleven kilometers off the coast of Córdoba, holds a warm 27 to 29 degrees year round, so you can dive its 29 sites in any month.

Visibility peaks from March to May and again from September to October, but the reefs stay quiet and alive all year, from the gentle gardens of Rosa Vieja to the walls of Bushnell. Explore the seasons on our interactive dive map and see our courses and dives to fit Colombia into your diving year.
