If you live in Montería, you are closer to a world-class Caribbean reef than almost anyone in Colombia, and most people here have no idea. The capital of Córdoba sits inland on the Sinú River, but the coast, and Isla Fuerte, is only a couple of hours away. This guide plans a weekend beach and diving escape from Montería that you can do without taking a single flight. It might be the easiest great trip you have never made.
The short hop to the coast
From Montería you drive west toward the sea and reach the port of Paso Nuevo in roughly two hours. That is closer than most weekend beach trips from any major Colombian city, which makes Montería the natural home base for Isla Fuerte.
At Paso Nuevo a boat crosses the eleven kilometers of open Caribbean to the island. The whole door-to-reef journey from Montería can be done in a single morning.

Leave Montería early, dive by afternoon
Because the distance is short, you do not lose a day to travel. Leave Montería after breakfast on Saturday, cross to the island by midday, and you can still fit an afternoon dive or a first-time Discover Scuba session the same day.
That efficiency is the great advantage of living in Montería. A trip that takes people from Medellín or Bogotá two travel days is, for you, a relaxed weekend.
Beach, reef and fresh fish
Isla Fuerte gives you the classic Caribbean weekend without the crowds: quiet beaches, warm water at 27 to 29 degrees, and reefs that stay alive because so few people dive them. Between dives, the island's fresh fish and slow rhythm do the rest.
Sunday can be pure beach and a second dive before the easy two-hour drive back to Montería. You are home for dinner, which no other Caribbean reef in Colombia can offer Monterianos.

Dive sites for every level
The island has 29 dive sites. If it is your first time, gentle reefs like Rosa Vieja and El Museo are calm and shallow. If you are certified, Bushnell offers deep walls with sharks and rays, and Bajo Bonito hides a submerged Zenú museum among the coral, a fitting site for anyone from Córdoba.
The Zenú heritage below the water is part of Córdoba's own story, which makes diving Isla Fuerte feel less like a getaway and more like discovering your own backyard.
