Cartagena is one of the most beautiful cities in the Americas, but its nearby beaches are busy, and its famous islands can feel like a theme park by noon. If you are based in Cartagena and want real Caribbean water, empty reefs and a genuine sense of escape, you have to go a little farther south. This guide plans a weekend beach and diving escape from Cartagena that trades the crowds for a quiet island most travelers never reach. The destination is Isla Fuerte, and it is closer than you think.
Why leave Cartagena for the weekend
The beaches inside Cartagena, from Bocagrande to La Boquilla, are convenient but rarely quiet, and the water is often cloudy from city runoff. The Rosario Islands are prettier, yet on weekends the day-trip boats arrive in waves and the snorkeling spots get crowded fast.
Heading south to the Córdoba coast changes everything. The farther you get from Cartagena, the cleaner the water and the emptier the sand, until you reach reefs where you may be the only diver in sight.

The route south
From Cartagena you drive south toward the Gulf of Morrosquillo, passing Tolú and Coveñas, and continue to the small port of Paso Nuevo. The overland leg runs roughly six to seven hours by car or bus, so most people leave Cartagena early on Friday or Saturday morning.
At Paso Nuevo you swap the road for the sea. A boat crosses the eleven kilometers of open Caribbean out to Isla Fuerte, and by the time you step off, Cartagena feels like another world.
A two-day plan
Arrive by early afternoon, settle into island lodging and spend the first day easing in with a swim and a sunset over open water. The pace here is slow on purpose, and that is exactly what a weekend out of Cartagena should feel like.
Give the second day to the water. A morning of diving or a Discover Scuba session, lunch of fresh fish, and an afternoon on an empty beach make a full escape before the trip back to Cartagena.

What you find in the water
Isla Fuerte holds 29 dive sites in water that stays a warm 27 to 29 degrees all year. Beginners get gentle beginner reefs like Rosa Vieja, while certified divers can explore walls and deeper sites such as Bushnell, where sharks and rays pass through.
This is diving without the queues you find on Cartagena's day trips. Small groups, healthy coral and long stretches of reef with no one else on them make the crossing more than worth it.
Make it your escape with Nautilus
Nautilus is the PADI dive center on Isla Fuerte, and we make the weekend simple: full gear rental and insurance included, certified instructors, and boats that leave straight from the island. Whether you are certified or breathing underwater for the first time, we build the day around your level.
If Cartagena is your base and you want one weekend that feels like a real trip, start with our courses and dives, plan your nights through partner lodging, and preview the reefs on our interactive dive map.
