A Caribbean road trip from Cartagena to Isla Fuerte

One of the best ways to see the Colombian Caribbean is to drive it, starting in colonial Cartagena and working your way south along the coast. A road trip from Cartagena to Isla Fuerte strings together beach towns, gulf islands and, at the end, one of the country's quietest dive destinations. This guide maps the route stop by stop, so you can turn a simple transfer into a proper Caribbean adventure with the reefs of Isla Fuerte as the finale.

Start in Cartagena

Cartagena is the natural starting point, with its walled old town, colorful streets and international airport. Give yourself a day or two here before hitting the road, since it is one of the most beautiful cities in the Americas.

When you are ready, point the car south. The full drive from Cartagena to the port of Paso Nuevo runs roughly six to seven hours, but the whole idea is to break it into stops rather than rush.

The best-preserved coral reefs of the continental Caribbean.

Stop in Tolú and Coveñas

The first natural stop is the Gulf of Morrosquillo, about three hours south of Cartagena. Tolú offers its boardwalk, bicycle taxis and boat trips to the San Bernardo islands, while neighboring Coveñas has long, calm beaches and famous sunsets.

Spend a night here to break up the drive and get your first taste of the gulf. It is also a good place to stock up before the more remote leg ahead.

Continue to Paso Nuevo

From Coveñas you carry on south toward the Córdoba coast and the small port of Paso Nuevo. The road grows quieter and more rural here, a sign you are leaving the busy gulf behind and heading somewhere fewer travelers go.

Paso Nuevo is where the road trip meets the sea. This is the departure point for boats out to Isla Fuerte, so time your arrival for the crossing rather than late in the day.

Warm, clear water almost all year round.

Cross to Isla Fuerte

From Paso Nuevo a boat crosses the eleven kilometers of open Caribbean to Isla Fuerte. The final leg of the trip is the most rewarding: the mainland shrinks behind you and a quiet, palm-covered island rises ahead.

This is where the road trip pays off. Isla Fuerte has 29 dive sites, warm water at 27 to 29 degrees and reefs so lightly visited that you often have them to yourself, a fitting reward after the drive from Cartagena.

End your road trip underwater with Nautilus

Cap the drive with the reefs themselves. Nautilus is the PADI dive center on Isla Fuerte, with certified instructors, full gear and insurance included, and boats straight from the island. Whether you finish your trip with a first Discover Scuba breath or a deep dive at Bushnell, we set it up for you.
