Diving has a reputation for being expensive, but that is mostly a myth built by a few luxury destinations. In much of the world, a day of diving costs less than a nice dinner back home. The trick is knowing where great reefs meet low prices, and how to keep your overall trip cheap. Here are the regions where your money stretches furthest underwater, plus a closer option worth knowing about.
Southeast Asia, the budget king
Countries like Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand combine spectacular reefs with famously low costs. In dive towns such as Amed, Moalboal or Koh Tao, dives, food and lodging are all inexpensive.
Koh Tao in particular is one of the cheapest places on Earth to get certified, which is why thousands of new divers earn their first card there every year. Once certified, you can often stay for weeks, since a single day's budget stretches across food, a room and multiple dives.

Latin America's affordable coasts
Mexico, Honduras and Colombia offer excellent value. The island of Utila in Honduras rivals Koh Tao for cheap certifications, while Mexico's Caribbean coast packs reefs and cenotes into a budget-friendly area.
Because these destinations are closer to the Americas, you also save on flights, which is often the biggest single cost of a dive trip.
Egypt, luxury reefs at low prices
The Egyptian Red Sea delivers some of the best value in the world. World-famous coral, wrecks and warm water come at prices well below comparable destinations, especially on liveaboards.
Package deals from Europe often bundle flights, lodging and diving, driving the per-dive cost down dramatically. A week on a Red Sea liveaboard can work out cheaper per dive than a handful of day trips elsewhere.

How to keep the whole trip cheap
The dives are rarely the biggest expense. To keep a dive trip affordable:
- Travel in low or shoulder season for cheaper flights and beds.
- Buy multi-dive packages instead of single dives.
- Stay in guesthouses near the water and eat local food.
- Bring your own mask and computer to skip small rental fees.
Small choices add up, and the reef costs the same whether you arrive rich or thrifty.
Great value, closer than Asia
For divers in the Americas, Isla Fuerte skips the long-haul flight entirely. You reach it by boat from Paso Nuevo after an easy overland trip from Montería, Cartagena or Medellín, cutting the single biggest travel cost.
At Nautilus, gear rental and Magenta insurance are included, and grouping four divers earns the best rates. Browse our courses and dives and see how affordable a world-class reef can be.
