San Bernardo del Viento is the coastal municipality of Córdoba that most travelers pass through on their way to Isla Fuerte. Set near the mouth of the Sinú River, it gives its name to the district that includes Paso Nuevo, the beach village where boats depart for the island. San Bernardo del Viento is a green, watery corner of Colombia's Caribbean, full of mangroves, river channels and long quiet beaches, and it is the closest mainland base for a trip to Isla Fuerte.
Where San Bernardo del Viento sits
San Bernardo del Viento lies on the coast of Córdoba, at the point where the Sinú River delta spreads out into the Caribbean. It is south of the Gulf of Morrosquillo, with Coveñas and Tolú to the north, and roughly two hours by road from Montería, the departmental capital.
The municipality is defined by water. The Sinú splits into several channels here, and mangrove forests line the coast, creating a landscape of islands, estuaries and beaches that is quite different from the dry hills further inland.

How the boat to Isla Fuerte works
The boat to Isla Fuerte does not leave from the town center of San Bernardo del Viento itself, but from the nearby beach village of Paso Nuevo, within the municipality. From there it is an 11 km crossing over open Caribbean water, usually a bit under thirty minutes depending on conditions.
Seas tend to be calmest in the morning, so most crossings are planned early in the day. If your stay on the island is arranged in advance, the transfer is coordinated for you, so you simply arrive at Paso Nuevo and board.
What to see around San Bernardo del Viento
The area rewards travelers who slow down. Highlights include the beaches and river mouth, boat rides through the mangrove channels, and the long sandy stretch of Playa Blanca. The nearby island of Isla El Toro and the delta wetlands are rich with birdlife and make lovely day excursions.
Local food leans on the sea and the river: fresh fish, shrimp, coconut rice and plantain. The pace is unhurried and prices are modest, which makes San Bernardo del Viento a comfortable, authentic base before heading out to the island.

The best reason to come is offshore
As lovely as the mainland is, the reason most divers and travelers pass through San Bernardo del Viento is what lies 11 km out to sea. Isla Fuerte is one of the best kept secrets of the continental Colombian Caribbean, a coral island with Zenú roots and warm, clear water year-round.
Nautilus is the island's PADI dive center, with 29 dive sites and small groups guided by certified instructors. Once you know San Bernardo del Viento is your gateway, browse our courses and dives and plan your stay through our lodging.
