The southern Colombian Caribbean holds two tempting island choices close together: the San Bernardo Islands, reached from Rincón del Mar or Tolú, and Isla Fuerte, reached from the Córdoba coast. Both promise warm turquoise water, coral and slow island days, and both are less touristy than Cartagena's islands. But they differ in character, in diving, and in how they feel. This fair comparison helps you decide which one suits your trip.
Location and access
The San Bernardo Islands lie in the Gulf of Morrosquillo, off the coast of Sucre, and are reached by boat from Tolú or the village of Rincón del Mar. Popular islands like Múcura and Tintipán are well set up for visitors and easy to reach as day trips or overnight stays.
Isla Fuerte sits a little further south, 11 km off Córdoba, reached by boat from Paso Nuevo near San Bernardo del Viento. It is a touch more remote, which keeps visitor numbers low and the atmosphere calm.

Scenery and beaches
The San Bernardo Islands are postcard pretty, with brilliant turquoise shallows, white sand and mangrove-fringed cays. They also include Santa Cruz del Islote, one of the most densely populated islands on Earth, a genuinely fascinating human curiosity. The bright shallow water is their signature.
Isla Fuerte is larger and greener, a true coral island with forest, beaches, mangroves and the famous giant Pisonia tree, El Árbol que Camina. It feels more like a living island community than a cluster of beach cays, with more to explore on foot.
The diving compared
Both destinations offer warm water and coral, and both sit within or near the Corales del Rosario y de San Bernardo protected area. Around San Bernardo, snorkeling is excellent in the shallows and there are dive spots, though many visitors come mainly for beaches and boat tours.
Isla Fuerte is more focused on diving, with 29 dive sites ranging from easy reefs like El Museo and Rosa Vieja to the advanced walls of Bushnell. With a PADI center running small guided groups, coral restoration and lionfish control, it is built around the underwater experience.

Who each island suits
Pick the San Bernardo Islands if you want bright shallow water, easy snorkeling, beach-club comfort and quick access from Tolú or Rincón del Mar, ideal for a relaxed island getaway with minimal planning.
Pick Isla Fuerte if you want serious, well-organized diving, a larger island to explore, healthy reefs and a genuinely off-the-beaten-path feel. It is the better choice for divers and for travelers seeking authenticity over polish.
