Diving near Montería

Montería is the capital of Córdoba, a river city on the banks of the Sinú in Colombia's Caribbean lowlands. It is a warm, cattle-country town known for its riverside boardwalk, its heat and its friendly pace, but it sits inland and has no diving of its own. What Montería does have is the closest major-city access to Isla Fuerte, the coral island 11 km off the Córdoba coast. For anyone in Montería who wants to scuba dive, the island is the natural and surprisingly close answer.

Montería, a river city in Córdoba

Montería sits on the Sinú River, and its Ronda del Sinú riverside park is the heart of city life, with walking paths, native trees and the traditional planchón ferry crossing the water. It is the commercial capital of a cattle-ranching region and a growing, modern city.

There is no coast in Montería itself, so beach and sea trips mean driving out toward the Córdoba coastline, where the fishing villages and the boat to Isla Fuerte await.

The road from Montería to the coast

From Montería, the drive to Paso Nuevo, the mainland village where the boat to Isla Fuerte departs, takes roughly 2 hours. That is the shortest access from any major inland city, which makes Isla Fuerte effectively Montería's local dive destination.

From Paso Nuevo, a short boat crossing brings you to the island. It is realistic to leave Montería in the morning and be underwater on a Córdoba reef the same day.

Why Isla Fuerte is Córdoba's diving pride

Isla Fuerte belongs to the department of Córdoba, born from the clash of tectonic plates and once a burial ground for Zenú chiefs. Its reefs are among the best preserved in the continental Colombian Caribbean, with 29 dive sites ranging from gentle coral gardens to deep walls.

Water sits between 27 and 29 degrees all year, and the marine life includes turtles, rays, moray eels, healthy coral and, at deeper sites like Bushnell, whitetip and even hammerhead sharks. It is a genuine natural treasure right at Montería's doorstep.
