Medellín, the City of Eternal Spring, sits high in the Andes of Antioquia, hundreds of kilometers from any coast. There is no ocean diving in Medellín itself, only reservoirs and lakes. But paisas love the Caribbean, and the closest stretch of good coast is the Gulf of Urabá and the Córdoba shoreline to the west and northwest. Among the reachable dive destinations, Isla Fuerte, the coral island off Córdoba, is one of the best, and it is closer to Medellín than better-known spots like Santa Marta.
No ocean in Medellín, but the coast is a drive away
Medellín sits in the Aburrá Valley in the Andes, so all its water is freshwater: reservoirs like Guatapé and mountain rivers. For scuba diving in the sea, paisas head to the Caribbean coast, and geography points west and northwest toward the Gulf of Urabá and Córdoba.
That direction is far more direct than the long haul east to Santa Marta, making the Córdoba coast the natural Caribbean choice for anyone starting from Medellín.

The road from Medellín to Isla Fuerte
Isla Fuerte lies 11 km off the coast of Córdoba. From Medellín, the drive to the coast and the village of Paso Nuevo, where the boat departs, takes roughly 9 to 10 hours, so most travelers make a weekend or longer of it or fly into Montería and drive about 2 hours from there.
Either way, once you reach Paso Nuevo a short boat crossing brings you to the island and its reefs. Many paisas combine the drive with a stop on the Córdoba coast, turning the journey itself into part of the holiday. Flying into Montería is the fastest option if you would rather skip the long highway hours.
Why the trip is worth it for paisas
Isla Fuerte is one of the best kept dive secrets of the continental Colombian Caribbean, a small island born from the clash of tectonic plates with Zenú heritage. Its 29 dive sites span gentle coral gardens, a submerged Zenú museum and deep advanced walls, all in warm 27 to 29 degree water.
For a Medellín diver used to cold reservoirs, the contrast could not be sharper: healthy coral, turtles, rays and, at Bushnell, the chance of whitetip and hammerhead sharks.

Turn a Medellín getaway into a dive trip
Nautilus is the PADI dive center on Isla Fuerte, with certified instructors, small groups, full gear rental and Magenta insurance included. Since a full Open Water certification takes just 3 to 4 days, a long trip from Medellín is more than enough time to leave the mountains a certified diver.
